November 2006

November 21, 2006 22:00 hrs

Well tonight I came home to find DJ here for a visit. Ya know, I'd heard a rumor. I know that talks were in progress but no one ever came right out and told me he was coming to visit, when he was coming to visit and for how long. In other news that I was not appraised of there is also apparently supposed to be a Thanksgiving feast at our house. I was un-aware that this occasion would be celebrated and accepted an invitation elsewhere. What to do, what to do? Why take pictures of the two love-birds on the couch, of course!

So we had a flood today. I will call it the great November flood of 2006. The damage was very localized. Areas impacted include the laundry room/bathroom on the main floor and any item unlucky enough to be directly below this area in the unfinished side of the basement. One of the hoses on the washing machine gave out. Now it wasn't the fancy steel-braid wrapped hoses that I bought a few months back after a friend made me paranoid about the rubber hoses the washer came with all those years ago. And it wasn't really a failure of a hose.

You know how when you get an out of balance load in your washer it will walk, across the room if there's nothing to stop it? Well, a few of those pacing loads of laundry and your drain hose just might have wiggled loose enough to pop off sometime from the pressure of the water exiting the washing machine. Now the washer and dryer live in a closet sized space in this bathroom. You have to pull one or the other unit out in order to get behind them and fix anything. It's usually easier to pull out the washer since there's no gas line or exhaust line to worry about. But that washer is awful heavy when it's full of 21 gallons water and wet clothes. First order of business was to grab every towel in the closet to try to dam the flow of water. Of course that damn drain hose comes off the bottom of the washer so it's still spouting out water at an unbelievable rate. I finally wrestled it out far enough to get a washcloth stuck into it to stop the hemorrhaging and then went to work to attempt to keep as much water in towels and thus out of the basement as possible, but I gotta tell you, it was a losing battle. It went down the dryer vent pipe which goes through the floor into the basement where it then runs along the ceiling of the basement to vent outside. It ran down the a/c/heater vent in the floor until it found a low spot with loose vent tape to leak out. It soaked a lot of boxes, mainly Christmas decorations, directly beneath the waterfall. Gravity sucks, man.

So go check the drain hose on your washer now. You know you won't sleep will until you do...

A great loss for the industry and humanity.

I can remember from the time I was small, my father always quoting Jack Palance movie lines or raving about what a consummate actor he is/was. In my adulthood I've had opportunity to watch various stages of the man's career and I have to agree. The man was phenomenal. He will be missed.

Note to Holly: My dad and I didn't always get along. I hope you & your dad did more often than not. I know everyone thinks that everyone else's parents are cool and their own parents are not. I hope you know how truly cool your dad was to me and hope he was just as cool to you.
