I don't think I would term myself an activist. I feel my activism takes the form of living my life in a manner that shows people I'm a good person; worthy of respect, worth emulating.

Occasionally I will get off my butt and get involved in something. Usually something to do with animals, like the recently abandoned cat I found placement for; or something like getting out the vote on an issue that I feel some passion for; and there is always my weekly trash walk in which I walk the country road I live on and pick up all the garbage that people toss out their car windows.

Causes I support include, but are not limited to:

bulletAnimal welfare
bulletHuman rights
bulletAnti-litter campaigns

On this page you will find links to what I have deemed worthwhile causes and worthy organizations. If you are able to support them in anyway, you have both their and my appreciation. I've also chosen to identify organizations that at first glance may seem worthy, but upon further review are no better than the organizations they protest against.

Animals

Local to Manhattan, Kansas

Purrfect Paws

Provides a transitional haven for unwanted, abandoned, and abused felines.

Homes for Disposable Pets

I am a no kill rescue shelter.

T. Russell Reitz

Regional Animal Shelter serving Riley and Pottawatomie counties.
National/International

Hugs for Homeless Animals

501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Dedicated to displaced and homeless animals.

Unworthy

I support the idea that every creature should be treated in a humane fashion. However, this organization is just like any other extreme fund raising rights group. Their actions are so far removed from their words that I cannot in good conscience support them. To read why, go here: P*E*T*A Kills Animals.

People

Local to Manhattan, Kansas

The Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice will educate and organize for peace and social justice at home and abroad. We believe this requires more equal access to wealth and well-being for all members of our community and nation.

Crisis Center
539-7935 (24 hrs) in Manhattan, KS

The Crisis Center offers crisis intervention counseling as well as assistance with medical and legal needs. Both personal and telephone contact with survivors of rape and sexual assault and their families are available. Services are free and confidential.

The Flint Hills Human Rights Project is a group working to promote GLBT civil rights in the Manhattan/Junction City/Wamego, Kansas, area. FHHRP meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month at First Congregational Church in Manhattan.
National/International

As America's largest gay and lesbian organization, the Human Rights Campaign provides a national voice on gay and lesbian issues. They effectively lobby Congress; mobilize grassroots action in diverse communities; invest strategically to elect a fair-minded Congress; and increase public understanding through innovative education and communication strategies.

Support Amnesty International

Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. Sometimes I vehemently disagree with their choices, but that doesn't mean they are always wrong and it doesn't mean that I am always right.

Awesome site! ллллл site! The Lewis E. Bingham Domestic Violence Library and Clearinghouse is jam packed with information and resources, right down to links to domestic violence coalitions in every state.

CDC's Division of Violence Prevention has many statistics. I hope you never need them, but if you do, here they are because if there is any one thing my government does well, it's crunch numbers..

Litter

Keep America Beautiful, the Nation's largest volunteer-based community improvement network

I have to admit, it was sort of pathetic that I had to go to a Canadian website to find a link to an anti-litter organization in the USA. But, it was worth the search to find Keep America Beautiful.

From the Canadian Plastics Industry Association are ways to keep from being buried in their product. This is where I found the Keep America Beautiful link.

From the Dept. of Environment & Conservation in New South Wales (Australia) comes a comprehensive site with some great ideas and campaigns.

CigaretteLitter.org places the blame for littered butts where it belongs: WalMart! Right...<nods head knowingly>

Remember Woodsy Owl and "Give a hoot. Don't pollute"? Woodsy has a new slogan...Personally I think they'd do better by letting Smokey Bear take over with something like, "I'll claw your lungs out if you litter."
